W(HERE) WE LIVE

Short films

W(HERE) WE LIVE is an ongoing series of short films exploring the complex, often invisible systems that shape housing in America today.

Through candid conversations with leading voices in urban planning, law, and policy — including Matthew Lewis, Communications Director at California YIMBY, and attorney Jennifer Hernandez — the series examines how zoning, regulation, politics, and local resistance affect who gets to live where, how much it costs, and how long it takes to build.

These interviews emerged from our larger Impossible House documentary project. But as the conversations unfolded, it became clear that each voice stood on its own, offering valuable insights into the housing crisis and the future of our communities. W(here) We Live brings those voices forward in focused, accessible episodes designed to spark dialogue and reflection.

The stories reveal that housing is not just about buildings — it’s about equity, opportunity, and belonging. Every rule, delay, and decision has ripple effects on real people: families struggling with affordability, workers forced into long commutes, and communities divided over growth.

We created this series to invite conversation. By unpacking the hidden barriers and entrenched narratives around housing, W(here) We Live asks a simple but urgent question: what kind of communities do we want to build, and for whom?
